SOCIAL IMPACT

Escalators have transformed societies in many different parts of the world.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

  • A common escalator that has a 7.5 horsepower motor, rising 15 feet above the ground, kept running 14 hours a day, six days a week will consume almost 7500 kilowatt hours (kwH) of electricity in a year.

  • A larger escalator will consume almost 31000 kwH of electricity a year.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

  • The world's first commercial escalator was made at the Otis factory in New York.

  • Charles Seeberger, the redesigner of the escalator, sold his patent rights to the Otis Elevator Company in 1910.

OPERATIONAL IMPACT

  • Escalators help customers in  supermarkets (e.g. Giant) to transport their trolleys from one level to another, allowing them to shop  more easily.

  • Escalators transport a larger number of people compared to the elevator which has limited/ restricted space.
