Operational Impact

Escalators transport a larger number of people compared to using the elevator which has limited/ restricted space, Most elevators have a maximum capacity of 20 people and are also limited by a smaller weight carrying capacity, but the escalator can has a much larger carrying capacity. The continuous nature of escalators also mean that users do not have to wait to use an escalator, unlike that for elevators.

Escalators are used in a huge number of places, such as shopping malls and office buildings, among others. One example of where the escalator can be found is described below:

One benefit of escalators is that it helps customers in supermarkets (e.g. Giant supermarket in Singapore) to transport their trolleys from one level to another, This allows them to shop  more easily and have a better experience

  • E.g. Shopping Cart Escalator, Shopping Cart Travellator

Evolution of escalators to conveyors:

The technology behind that of the escalators has been utilised and has resulted in the invention of the conveyor belt. The invention of conveyers have helped to improve the operational flow of how companies function, as well as improve efficiency of service. Products/goods can now be transported smoothly from one area to another.

  • E.g. Supermarket Cashier Conveyor, Factory Production Lines
